The American Cooperative School of La Paz, Bolivia is able to accommodate students with mild learning disabilities in grades KG - 8. A mild learning disability means the youngsters are able to succeed in a regular classroom setting the majority of the school day with some time spent in our Learning Center working with a specialist.
The school does not provide speech therapy, psycho-educational assessments or psychological counseling. We can refer families to private therapists and psychologists for these services although English-speaking specialists are limited in La Paz.
Kindergarten to Grade Five
Our Learning Center is able to provide a maximum of one period per day of individual and small group instruction to elementary children who have a diagnosed learning disability. We are not able to provide service to students whose Individualized Educational Programs ("official" paperwork from the previous school) indicate more than one period per day of service.
Grades Six through Eight
We have very limited services, one period per day maximum, for learning disabled students in grades six through eight.
Grades Nine through Twelve
We do not offer services for learning disabled students at the High School level. Our college preparatory program is very demanding and youngsters with learning disabilities would find it difficult to be successful in our regular classroom setting.
Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactivity
We can make recommendations for children who take medication for Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactivity if they are able to function in a regular classroom setting. We are able to provide academic assessments, levels of reading, mathematics, and written language for all grade levels.
Procedure
If a prospective parent has a child who is learning disabled, the family should communicate directly with the Principal at the American Cooperative School prior to considering or bidding on the post. All testing, evaluations and school reports must be forwarded to the school to be reviewed by the Student Support Team (SST) to determine if the school can meet the educational needs of the student before he or she can be accepted. It is very important that families with government agencies, non-governmental organizations and international organizations communicate directly with the school.
