High School Introduction

ACS High School (Grades 9-12)
The main focus of the ACS high school is to prepare students for the best universities and colleges in the United States, and secondarily in outstanding schools in South America and Europe. We are committed to excellence and to maintaining our reputation as one of the best international schools available to expatriates and international students. We continue to raise the quality of instruction in our high school program by recruiting and hiring highly qualified, certified, and experienced teachers, tightening our entrance requirements, reducing class size, raising our expectations for students – particularly in the areas of writing and math – and by increasing the number of students in our AP classes. Students who successfully complete the ACS high school program have excellent work habits, are independent thinkers, and exhibit a social conscience. In short, they are well prepared for the demands of university work.

With that in mind, our curriculum in grades 9-12 is similar to what you will find in many schools in the US. All students participate in week long experiential learning trips called Classroom Without Walls as well as community service projects of their choosing. The high school supplements its course offerings with Advanced Placement courses in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English, History, Physics, Psychology, Spanish, and World History. Our class sizes are in the 15-20 range with about 40 students per grade level.

Along with a rigorous academic program, students are encouraged to participate in our numerous extracurricular activities. ACS offers a wide range of sports and clubs for students to choose. Varsity sports include soccer, volleyball, basketball and track. Clubs and activities range from jazz band and drama to rock climbing, mountain biking, and outdoor adventure. We strive to challenge both mind and body.

Students applying to ACS who are non-native English speakers are required to take English language and English reading examinations. Our school does not offer special education services for high school students. We do not provide speech therapy, psycho-educational assessments, or psychological counseling, although we are happy to refer families to private therapists and psychologists for these services.

The secondary principal would prefer to consult with parents in advance if the child applying has special needs, and can be contacted by e-mail at: acs@acslp.org
