| Maryland has various items that
represent it in a very special manner. The flag of Maryland is very
special because it was adopted from the design of Lord Baltimore's
shield in 1904. The state bird is called on oriole (also the name of a
baseball team in Maryland). This bird was deduced to be the state bird
because of its colors that the state founder, Lord Baltimore, had on hi
shield. The Oriole was named the state bird in 1947. The great seal of
Maryland is deduced from lord baltimores shield of arms and is used by
the goverment to prove a document authentic. The national song is a
dixie song called Maryland , My Maryland written by a 22 year old
teacher called James Ryder Randall. He was inspired by a story in a
newspaper and then wrote the national song. The less important state
icons such as the state dog wich is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever wich is
a breed found in the 1800's. Then comes the state crustacean wich is
a spicy treat to the fisherman this crustacean is the blue crab
that was made the state crab in 1989. Afer the crustacean comes the
national insect wichis the Checer spot butterfly that was made the
state insect in 1973. The state boat became the ship jack in
1985. The state tree was the Wye oak beacause of its abundance in
Maryland. The state fosil became the Ecphora quadricostata or a extinct
snail that was found in 1985 and was he first discovery made by an
american and published in europe. The state sport was, and still is,
joustleing which is a sport practiced on a horse wich consists of
jumping obstacules and breaking the record of your oponent. The state
flower broughts evry fourth of july and consists of therteen yellow
pettals and is all over Marylands hillside it is called Black Eyed Susan this was made the state flower in 1918. The fish of the state is the rockfish or the striped bass, scientificley known as the Morone Saxatilis, it was made thestate fish because of its high price in the fishing market. It was designated to be the state fish in 1965. All of these state features can be seen anywere specially if you do some tourisim. |
