Gold is the thing that made all the prospectors and other people looking for a better life come to California.  The thing that made lots of people poor is that they didn’t find any gold.  These people started great businesses like Abercrombie and fitch and William Sonoma.  Another way that people made money was by "mining the miners".  This meant selling to the miners the miners needed for mining gold.  Mining gold is very expensive so you had to be rich to be a successful miner.  The things that the shop guys sold were boots, pans, food hydraulic mining water guns and mercury to take the gold out of the ore.  There were a lot of different types of mining.  Two of these were panning for gold and hydraulic mining.  Panning for gold was the most popular way to find small bits of gold in rivers and streams.  Some people still use the technique of panning for gold today.  Another way of mining for gold is hydraulic mining.  This involves a high-powered water gun that shoots water at a cliff and the gold falls too the bottom.  After the gold falls they search for gold.
