Tennessee has a dynamic history that highlights major events in America's development.  A Spanish adventurer named Hernando De Soto in 1540 first explored the territory containing Tennessee. The area was populated by the Cherokee Indians who hasd named it "Tanasi". Then years later, ion the 1670s and 80s, the French and the English claimed the during adventures by Jacques Marquette and Louise Joliet, Sieur de la Salle, and James Needham and Gabriel. in 1763 Great Britain took over when the French and Indian wars ended. The first settlement was made in 1769 in the Watauga River valley. Tennessee entered the union on june 1, 1769. Tennessee joined the confederacy during the Civil War althought it had some pro-union supporters within the state. Like many other Southern States, it was slow to change and remained agricultural. In the late 1900's, the state attracted more buisness and became the center for country and blues music in the United States. And Tennessee's slogan is, "Tennessee - America at its best"
