1. Intro to the Weyr

The Weyr, a mystical place where dragons are born and ridden, is where dreams become reality. On top of a volcano, Benden Weyr, sits an alert watch. A dragon with its wings stretched out is ready to fight evil. The dark mysterious Weyr is where the riders of grown dragons live.

To become a dragon rider is Keevan's biggest dream; to sit on the neck of such an amazing creature flying over the lands of Pern. The only thing in Keevan's way is his height. Compared to the other candidates, Keevan is tiny giving him a smaller chance of becoming one of the chosen dragonriders. Keevan knows that his chance of becoming one of the chosen riders is not good. He is reminded all the time by Beterli, the biggest boy; but nothing was going to discourage Keevan from going to The Hatching, where the dragons choose their lifelong companion.
