The life-cycle of a butterfly is referred
to as a "complete life-cycle" just because it has more than 4 different
stages and because each of the stages serves a different purpose in the
life of the butterfly. The first stage of a butterfly during it's
life-cycle is the egg. When the egg hatches it turns into the second
stage when it is a little caterpillar. As the caterpillar starts to
grow it forms a cocoon (chrysalis) around itself with it's broken
tissue. The butterfly stays in the cocoon for a whole season, usually
winter. Then with the broken tissues of the caterpillar a butterfly is
formed in the chrysalis. As soon as the butterfly is ready to hatch
again and the cocoon has gotten thinner and changed its color, a
butterfly comes out. When a butterfly is born, it goes through
courtship, mating, and egg-laying. A butterfly can also migrate or
colonize in a new habitat.
