PARTS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

The nervous system is made up of three different parts and a sub-system.  These parts are the brain, the spinal cord, and the nerves.  The sub-system is the peripheral nervous system.  They all work together to help you think, feel, and be aware of things that happen all around you.

The brain is also called the center nervous system.  It controls everything in the nervous system and in all the other systems.  The brain is made up of fatty, wrinkled, tissue.  The brain is protected by several layers.  The first layer is the skull, next is the outermost layer, which is the hardest and strongest layer, the next layer is the arachnoid, or middle layer, the last is the innermost layer.  Cerebrospinal fluid, a clear liquid bathes the entire brain and protects it.  These layers help you maintain your brain in tact, without a brain, you wouldn't be reading this, or doing your everyday activities.

The spinal cord is also really important in the nervous system.  This is what you have in your back.  It is protected by your vertebrae.  The spinal cord is connected to the bottom of the brain, or the brain stem.  It's the body's main nerve.  It branches out to 12 pair of nerves which they branch out to others.  All your impulses from the brain are sent to and from the brain.  The nerves in the body send a piece of information to your spinal cord, which send the information immediately to the brain.  The brain orders the nerves to act, but this information is sent to the spinal cord, which then sends the order to the nerves to act.

The nerves are the messengers of your body.  They tell you the brain what is happening all around you.  They are pale, tough, stringlike organisms.  The resemble living telephone wires.  They reach to every part of your body.  Nerves start at the spinal cord and run around your body.  They carry millions of tiny electrical nerve signals every second.
